On 8 April, the Fundació Grífols UVic-UCC Chair of Bioethics organizes with the Americana Film Fest a morning screening of the film “The Thinking Game” for secondary school students.
This documentary tells the story of Demis Hassabis, the search for artificial intelligence, and its ethical use to improve the lives of people. When Demis was 8 years old, he was one of the best chess players in the world. When he competed, he would think about how, if all the participants combined their remarkable intelligence and worked together, they could accomplish extraordinary feats to enhance people's lives. With this in mind, he abandoned the world of competitive chess and decided to dedicate his life to the development of artificial intelligence that would improve the lives of others.
This is how DeepMind was born, a university initiative and personal project that was later acquired by Google. Among its many milestones, it has revolutionised our understanding of protein folding, provided free tools to scientists worldwide to advance medicine, and protect the environment. This breakthrough in understanding protein folding earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024.

Can we the final transition be experienced in a meaningful way? How do we cope with advanced illness? What does it truly mean to die in peace? The approach of death often brings suffering, yet when there is time to prepare —both for the individual and their loved ones— it can offer us the opportunity to consciously complete life.
This talk, in collaboration with Amics per a la UNESCO de Barcelona (Friends of UNESCO, Barcelona), seeks to broaden our understanding of death by exploring it from psychological and spiritual perspectives. Being mindful of death, even in health, can enrich our lives, connecting us to what is most essential and offering a path to greater introspection.
This talk is offered by Cristina Llagostera, a psychologist specializing in palliative care, psycho-oncology, and grief and loss support.

On 5 March, the Víctor Grífols i Lucas Foundation presented its Ethics and Science Awards for schools, recognizing health, scientific and social projects that promote awareness and ethical reflection among students.
This year, the first prize went to the project entitled “Evolution from a genetic perspective”, from the Barres i Ones Secondary School in Barcelona. The cases involving payment in exchange for iris scans sparked students' critical thinking through similar scenarios closely related to genetics.
The second prize went to the project “Moments for you”, from the Salvador Seguí Secondary School in Barcelona. This project involves a training program which offers free hairdressing services to the homeless to improve their self-esteem and facilitate social reintegration.
Finally, the third prize went to the project “The city we need” by the Garbí Pere Vergés school in Esplugues de Llobregat. In this project, students designed sustainable cities by integrating science, ethics and technology.
The award-winning students and teachers presented their projects at the awards ceremony, held at the Grífols Museum, where they also enjoyed a guided tour of the museum.
